This month’s fashion challenge is hosted by Petite on a Penny:
Create an outfit for a summer wedding (the dress code is up to you). For bonus points try to make your whole outfit, head to toe, come in under $100! (Or, exclude shoes and accessories to meet the $100 mark.)
This month’s fashion challenge is a challenge I’ve been facing a couple of times per year for the past x number of years. I used to buy dresses at discount stores like Nordstrom Rack, for usually around $100, that were originally priced at $400+, which I already felt was a bargain. If the crowd is different at the wedding, I usually will repeat the dress, but not in the same year. Purchasing a new dress for each wedding seems wasteful, but you don’t want to get caught wearing the same dress!
Recently I’ve found that there are a couple of places to get even better-priced dresses, such as H&M. Last year I purchased a dress from H&M for $30 that I wore to a wedding as well, (link to post). Properly accessorizing can change an outfit from casual to formal. The dress I wore last week to my friend’s wedding in Vancouver was only $15! I call this style “The Cleopatra” (link to post). The wedding dress code was semi-formal.
For this fashion challenge and for a more formal dress code, this Max Studio dress fits the bill. I picked it up at Nordstrom Rack clearance section last year in San Francisco for $15, originally $200! I call this style “The Carmen”.
The material is light and airy, suitable for summertime weather. Simple ponytail at nape of neck and a Japanese velcro bump-it, this look is easy and accessories can be kept simple. If you haven’t already discovered Amrita Singh costume jewelry, they’re great items to add to your collection, plus they can be purchased at bargain prices at sample sales, my favourite is Enviius (invite link here). Or more dramatic vintage-look earrings?
After many painful blisters, I’m a strong believer that shoes are worth the investment. My shoes won’t be included in the cost for the challenge.
Dress $15
Earrings $16
Velcro Bumpit $2
Clutch $20
+Bangles $10
TOTAL $63
(taxes not included)
Side note: Vintage earrings were free and found them in my car.
